About Me

Lara Coventry Cox

It all began when I was born… born a bit weird.

I’m not sure where I came from really. The black sheep, the “special” one.

Compensation was made for me being quiet and wierd.
As a child I spent my time silently playing with animals of any kind, from lizards to dogs, cats, mice and ponies.

So for me to be at school was kind of a waste of time.. I spent it staring out the window dreaming of becoming a mermaid so I could swim with dolphins, but of course like the movie, to be able grow my legs back so I could ride my Horse.

So you get the picture…

At the age of 11 I became a volunteer at Atlantis marine park (harrowing them until they let me in) I was doing absolutely anything they let me.. which became me hosing the sea lion poo and fish bucket cleaning.. but it also (because I already had horses) got me the job of looking after one of the mini ponies.

By the time I was 14 This was my first official breaker, her name was “Lady Di” yes this was the 80’s.

She was a chestnut and white miniature pony who I broke in to the harness to tow the chariot for the Roman show at the marine park.

A year later It was from this training experience that the magical day came for Carol Osler to turn up at my door and offer me a “proper” job .. the catch was that I become an Aquarist where I had to get my scuba ticket and feed the sharks.. as long as I did this I would be a trainee dolphin trainer…

hmmm… should I stay at school or take the job ??????

Seriously ??? I mean really!!!!!

So then I very happily never went back to school, where they teach nothing useful.

So I started as a marine mammal trainer at the age of 15 and have never looked back..

The skills I learnt using positive reinforcement have literally become my natural way of communication. It’s been ingrained in me from such a young age that I actually don’t think about it… it just happens.

that’s been a lot of years.

I moved from Atlantis to Sea World when Atlantis was closed.. (a long story.. anyone who wishes to hear I am happy to share what happened to the marine park)

So as I grew up I became me… it was natural for me to look at the animals who I love more than humans and how they live and what they think and feel..

To cut a long story short I quit Sea World.

Now what does a marine mammal trainer do if that’s all they’ve ever done??

I quickly turned my positive reinforcement skills to my horses.. and any other animal I came across.

Guess what.. it works all the same…. yes every animal is different, but they all respond well to positive reinforcement.

Through spending my entire life with animals I know them very well.. I can think like an animal because I’ve had such close relationships with them since my early days.

One of the beautiful souls I worked with at Atlantis was a sea lion named Mahi… oh my heart .. what a beautiful animal..

Mahi and I

Mahi was my girl, she and I just clicked..
in the memory of Mahi I’ve named my training concept Mahi Mahi Method .. for so many good reasons..

Mahi Mahi is a fish which is also called a “dolphin fish” it also means strong..

The training method of positive reinforcement used to the level I’ve used for dolphins is the highest level it can be. The strongest reinforcement possible. Quick and precise..

so to use “dolphin” and “strong” is then translated to Mahi Mahi..

My logo also represents this..

My training since pivoting to horses predominantly, has brought me success with all the horses I’ve had the pleasure of working with and saving. It has also brought me success in the arena with my sport of reining and ranch riding.

Results aside, the relationship I have with animals is what’s most important to me and it’s obvious to anyone who spends time here at my Mahi Mahi property on the water here in NSW.

I’ve managed to create a lifestyle with my family of horses and my little girl Dixie Jeep right on the water, where we have wild dolphins swim past.. yes while we’re swimming the horses or sitting staring out to the river mouth.

It’s my job now I feel to pass on this magical yet realistic way of communication with animals.. to help animals and their people to be in harmony with each other, to live as naturally as possible and be emotionally centred..

so here I share what I know.. I know it because I’ve done it.. not over night but for over 35 years of hands on real experiences. And 50 years of natural abilities.

The hard part I’ve had to learn since is how to manage the internet to be able to reach whoever it is who’s searching for more, yet to be able to that from Anywhere in the world..
